PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS of SANTA BARBARA:

On Wednesday, July 17, 2013, The Progressive Democrats of Santa Barbara will deliver our July "Educate Congress" Letter to our Congresswoman Lois Capps, asking her to co-sponsor some important legislation that has recently come across her desk for consideration.  We have been watching and waiting to see her name on the list of Congress people in the House who have stepped up to co-sponsor these critical bills

I have attached the letter (in this post) which I will be delivering in person to Capps' office at 301 E. Carrillo Street this Wednesday at noon.  I hope that any of you who can will show up and accompany me to Lois Capps' door to deliver this important letter.

I will bring signs.  I would love to see you there on Wednesday.

Peace, Progress, Courage & Compassion,

The Letter:

To: The Honorable Congresswoman Lois Capps

From: Your Progressive Constituents of CA CD 24

July 17, 2013

Dear Congresswoman Capps,

As voters in CA CD 24, we urge you to recognize the 48th Anniversary of Medicare by healing America and ending austerity. We call upon you to:

Cosponsor, speak out, and support H.R. 1579: The Inclusive Prosperity Act—also known as the Financial Speculation Tax (FST) or Robin Hood Tax (RHT)—which would generate hundreds of $billions to fund job creation, expand the economy, alleviate student debt, address healthcare needs, and protect essential programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. This small levy on certain financial transactions would limit speculation that causes unstable financial bubbles, and fiscal instability. The U.S. prospered under a similar tax from 1914 to 1966. The United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore and several other nations currently have such a tax. Lead sponsor: Rep. Keith Ellison (MN).

Cosponsor, speak out, and support H.R. 676: the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act which would establish a non-profit universal healthcare program. Instead of cuts, we should expand Medicare to cover everyone in the United States. Medicare is cheaper and much more popular than private health insurance. Expanding Medicare to the entire population would save more than enough to eliminate cost sharing (co-pays and deductibles). Lead sponsor: Rep. John Conyers (MI).

Cosponsor, speak out, and support H.R. 1000: The Humphrey-Hawkins 21st Century Full Employment and Training Act which would establish the National Full Employment Trust Fund to create employment opportunities for the unemployed and would provide a job to any American who is willing and able to work. In addition to creating jobs, this legislation would address community needs by improving housing, education, job readiness, and infrastructure. Lead Sponsor Rep. John Conyers (MI).

We invite continued engagement with you. Please provide us with the name and contact information for your staffer(s) responsible for the above issues.

Thank you for your time and attention,

Lois Hamilton
