When: Wednesday, January 19, 2011 Socializing at 6:30pm/Meeting at 7pm Where: Lunch room of the Venture Tech Building 402 E. Gutierrez Street (enter from parking-lot on Olive Street) Our Meeting Agenda: Politics of Homelessness & Progressive Democrats of America Priorities for 2011 Special Guest: Rob Fredricks, Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara Homeless issues are hot topics in Santa Barbara. We’re likely to hear about homelessness a lot during this year's Santa Barbara City Council Election. Come to our meeting to get facts and learn about short and long-term public policy answers. We will have a discussion on PDA Priorities for 2011 with Lois Hamilton, PDSB Leader and newly elected delegate to the State Democratic Convention. We have a lot to do in 2011! We need our members to step up and learn how we can be an effective force in California politics to make the Progressive issues become reality in our state, like Single Payer Health Care for all Californians. Since they did not get it done in Washington D.C., we must get it done in California! ______________________________________________________ Homeless Action in Santa Barbara --What’s Going on Right Now? #1. Learn more: 2904 State St.--Funding Request to City Council to Occur Tuesday, January 25 at 2 PM--City Hall Council Chambers Dear Friends of the Housing Authority On Tuesday, the Housing Authority was before the Santa Barbara City Council Finance Committee (click on link below for City Staff report) requesting Redevelopment Agency affordable housing set-aside funds to acquire a former 9-unit motel building at 2904 State St. The Housing Authority’s plans to lease the property at a nominal rent to WillBridge. WillBridge is a small but important local non-profit that does incredible work with the chronic homeless. They provide them with transitional housing with support services to help them return to employment and housing. If the client is disabled (as many chronic homeless people are) they work with them to access services and benefits to stabilize their lives. The City Council Finance Committee approved our funding request on a 2 Yea and 1 Abstention vote to go forward to the full Council on Tuesday, January 25th at 2 PM. The Housing Authority firmly believes that the only way to end chronic homelessness is thru supportive housing like the one we are proposing with WillBridge. If this type of housing is not established, we as society pay a huge cost financially (as this population cycles in and out of our emergency rooms and criminal justice system) and morally as these troubled souls remain on our streets. Some people are now questioning if establishing this type of housing is the right thing to do. ..and think that SB does too much in helping the homeless. If you agree with the Housing Authority that this type of housing is exactly what we need to be doing to end homelessness, we ask that you attend the 1/25/11 City Council meeting in City Hall at 2 PM and make your opinion known. If you cannot attend, please call or email the City Council. We thank you for your support.
